SOUNDWALK: THE BLACK SEA PROJECT
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Somewhere along the shores of the Black Sea, lies a bustling sonic landscape where sabres of ancient heros faintly resonate while modern cargo ships make its way to Odessa. This space is a melting pot of memories and sounds belonging to the many peoples of the Black Sea. Bonded by the last frontiers of Europe (Romania and Bulgaria), Turkey, Georgia, Russia, the Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula, this vast inland sea once was a busy gateway between the Slavic cultures and the Middle East.
OUR MISSION: TO TRACE AN ACOUSTIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SEA
The Black Sea is also known for the heroic journey of Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. On July 1st, Soundwalk (www.soundwalkcollective.com), an international sound collective, will embark on a sailboat from Istanbul equipped with scanners, aerial antennae, field microphones and a video camera.
We will cover almost 2000 Nautical Miles to retrace parts of Jason’s mythical quest, passing the Cape at the northeast of the Bosphorus river (Turkey) to reach “Colchis” (modern Black Sea coast of Georgia). Our journey will further make its way by Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine Russia, Georgia and back to Istanbul. Along this route we will cover thousands of disparate transmissions meeting on the open waters; the voices and sounds of the many communities across the shores. When put together they are telling a beautiful tale of great cultural diversity. Our last stop will be Kazantip located on the Crimean Peninsula.
DRAWING A SONIC CARTOGRAPHY OF GREAT CULTURAL DIVERSITY
Alternating between day and night shifts, we are manning our recording equipment 24 hours. Throughout our journey of ‘sound fishing’ we keep a travel log with images and a live stream of field recordings. You can listen in with us to intimate voices, marine radio, air traffic, music excerpts, fishermen, morse codes, calls to prayer or cargo communications filling up the sonic spheres.
LIVE PERFORMANCES EN ROUTE & DOCUMENTARY/ LIVE STREAM
Upon arrival on each port we host performances on the boat. Our ‘acoustic catch’ of the day will be hand-etched onto vinyl records and then mixed live on boat (using 12 turntables) into an immersive sound environment. The performances will also be included in our Black Sea documentary and streamed live.
We will be performing in Batumi (Georgia), Istanbul, Samsun (Turkey), Varna (Bulgaria), Constanta & Sulina (Romania), Odessa (Ukraine), Yalta & Kerch (Crimean Peninsula/Ukraine), Novorossiysk & Sochi (Russia), Batumi & Tblisi (Georgia) - including a performance for the opening of Eastern Europe’s craziest music and dance beach party in Kazantip.
Please check our website for dates and for our upcoming travel log.
BE PART OF OUR ACOUSTIC JOURNEY
We want to share this mind blowing experience with you and need your support to capture the sonic treasures of the Black Sea. Our sound fishing tour is captured in a feature length documentary and in a photography book with images by Soundwalk founder Stephan Crasneanscki including a CD of the Black Sea sound piece. All the sounds and visuals collected on our 42 day journey will be mixed into an audio-visual fresco that will go on tour around the world.
Please join us and help us to make this happen! THANK YOU!!!
